Yesterday was a FIVE Green Arrow Day.

Intensive Care Units (ICU)

Good Morning,

Yesterday was a FIVE Green Arrow Day. Below are the particulars for the day.

There are several news stories that have referenced ICU occupancy and the potential shortage of beds. There are about 115,000 such beds in the US, and to date, based on what we have seen, the highest number of COVID ICU patents at any one day was just short of 19,000. In May, there were many days in which there were over 16,500 ICU patents related to the virus. Yesterday there were 15,371, and the current trends show about a 9% reduction compared to a month ago.

When we take a step back, hospitals stopped performing many procedures to ensure there was the capacity to handle the most severe consequences of COVID 19. Now that we better understand how to cope with COVID, hospitals have, for the most part, resumed “business as normal.” That means some patients not infected with the virus will need ICU care. The below map shows ICU occupation for all patents. As one Texas hospital has mentioned, 85% of their ICU use is for other than COVID patents. In other words, our country can take care of COVID patents while taking care of others as well.

US ICU Occupancy

The map shows, by state, ICU occupancy. Arizona, has the highest at 80.3%. These include all patents. The majority of ICU occupants are not related to COVID.
