Forced Ranking
Good Morning,
Yesterday was a SIX Green Arrow day, and the details are listed below. This week we are highlighting potential approaches to better cope with COVID. We know the virus isn’t going to vanish overnight. What can we do to better manage the risks?
Forced Ranking (FR) is a management tool that could be beneficial in enhancing our collective abilities to minimize the impact of COVID 19. The process would begin by ranking accurately the various health conditions that have a higher probability of a fatality into one of five classifications ranging from high to low risk. This would be an iterative process to modify the designations to fit actual results. By now, we should know and report fatalities by the risk categories. Not everyone is at a universal risk.
Those in the “high” risk categories maximum precautions are in order while those in the “low” classifications can moderate restrictions. The first forced Ranking would be by health assessment, and then another one later can be created for environmental conditions.
Forced Ranking (FR):
This pie chart forces one to classify health conditions in risk categories. We know that 5.4% of those that contracted the virus died and their specific health conditions (i.e., age, weight, diabetic status, et cetera). What were those particular conditions? A process would ensue until the specific health traits would equal 5% of the US population, and then be identified as “high risk.” Then the next level (moderate risk), the one after that and so on. Public reporting should match these risk groups. For example, there were 100 deaths today, and all but one were in the high-risk category.
Hypothetical State
This pie chart shows the results of a “Hypothetical State (HS)” in which the actual deaths were retrospectively analyzed. In this HS, it was found that 80% of the fatalities were either in nursing homes or had significant underlying health conditions. The actual results would be continually compared to the FR and changes made accordingly.
